The Joseph
A. Myers Center for Research on Native American Issues is
pleased to announce it is accepting applications for a summer
internship and mentoring program for University of California at
Berkeley undergraduates.
Program Overview:
This summer, in collaboration with the Center
for Urban Ethnography (CUE) at the University of California at
Berkeley, the Joseph A. Myers Center for Research on Native American
Issues is offering a free research program for highly-motivated
Berkeley undergraduate social scientists. This program will provide
mentorship, hands-on research experience, and advanced training in
designing and executing a project using qualitative methods for all
who attend. Applications are due May 1st.See below for

What is
the Myers Center Summer Undergraduate Research Internship Program?
The Myers Center Summer Undergraduate Research Internship Program
provides mentorship, hands-on research experience, and advanced
training in designing and executing a project using qualitative
methods to selected applicants who are interested in conducting
research on issues confronting Native Americans in the United States
today.
Specifically:
1. The Program provides students with accelerated methodological
training in the design and practice of qualitative methods in weekly
seminars taught by advanced graduate students who are fellows of the
Center for Urban Ethnography (CUE) (http://cue.berkeley.edu).
The topics in the seminars include the following:

Overview of Issues
Confronting Native American Communities Today

The Logic and
Practice of Qualitative Research Design
-
Participant
Observation
-
In-Depth Interviewing
-
Practical Computer
Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis in ATLAS.ti
2. Students develop hands-on research and logistical experience and
receive structure and guidance in the development of an independent
and original empirical project.
3. Students meet weekly with a CUE graduate fellow who provides
mentorship and guidance on the student’s project. Students are also
encouraged to talk to their mentors about graduate school.
4. Students work as research assistants on ongoing CUE projects for
five hours per week under the guidance of their mentor.
What does the program cost?
The program is free to those who are accepted. It does not
include any stipend for room or board, although small scholarships
may be made available based on need.
What
is expected of Students?
1.
Students must attend all seminars and do any assigned readings.
2.
Students must meet weekly with their mentor/advisor.
3.
Students must develop or continue an empirical research project
that uses qualitative methods.
4.
Students must submit a brief report noting their progress on the
project at the end of the summer.
5.
Students must commit five hours per week to work as a research
assistant on a CUE project.
